Why We Built STAFFVIEW: The Problem with Traditional Platforms

"Imagine waking up every day, hoping you’ll get a job — but never knowing if you’ll actually get it. Relief teaching was meant to give me freedom, but instead, it felt like a never-ending hustle."

Back in 2009, I kicked off my teaching career as a Temporary Relief Teacher (TRT) in Adelaide. Like many others, I thought it’d be a stepping stone — a way to get my foot in the door, make connections, and eventually land something more stable.

And I did. I moved into contracts, took on leadership roles, worked in rural communities, and learned a lot along the way. But there was always one part of the job that never got easier: the hiring process.

So much of it felt out of my hands — jobs seemed to depend more on who you knew than what you could bring to the table. And after years of rewriting the same selection criteria and being ghosted after applications, I reached a breaking point. In 2018, I stopped applying altogether. I just needed a breather.

Letting go felt surprisingly good — and honestly, it was the beginning of something better.

Finding Peace in Flexibility

In 2020, I moved back to suburbia and took on a 0.6 contract. The balance felt right, and I fell back in love with teaching. When that contract ended, I returned to relief teaching in Adelaide — and to my surprise, it felt right.

I’d come full circle, but with a totally different mindset. The variety, the freedom, the chance to walk into new classrooms each day — I thrived in it. What I once saw as temporary now felt like a lifestyle I could embrace.

But the same old challenges were still there, and not just for me.

The Problem With Traditional Relief Teaching Platforms

Booking relief teachers in Adelaide has gone digital — but instead of making things easier, most platforms just added a new layer of frustration.

Here’s what I experienced — and what many other TRT teachers still face:

  • Weekly availability updates (cue the Sunday night dread)

  • Job requests that go unanswered for weeks or months

  • Non-stop notifications you can't switch off

  • A constant scramble to reply first or miss out

  • Zero feedback, zero transparency

  • Jobs based on who you know, not what you offer

  • A general feeling of being out of control

Whether you’re using texts, emails, or something like Casual Match login, the systems don’t always reflect how teaching actually works — or what educators really need.

As someone who’s been both a teacher and a leader, I saw this frustration from both sides. Education jobs in Adelaide were going unfilled while amazing teachers were overlooked.
